Different Poker Games That You Should Learn!

Certainly, the most popular poker game in the whole world is Texas Hold’Em. Almost everyone knows how to play it, but leaves many other different poker games aside. However, other games can offer you a lot of fun, excitement, and challenges, so it is worth checking it out. In this article, I covered the most famous Texas Holdem alternatives, so be ready to learn different poker games and try it out!

Omaha Poker Rules

Omaha is the second most popular poker game you can find online. It is quite similar to Texas Hold’em regarding the overall gameplay and has identical hand rankings. However, instead of getting two hole cards, each person receives four, and there are additional five community cards dealt face up on the table.

The whole flow of the hand in Omaha is identical to Texas Hold’em. Each player receives his poker cards, there’s a preflop betting round, and then the flop, turn, and river are dealt. As I mentioned, the strength of possible combinations is the same as in Texas Hold’em too. If you have any questions about hand strength, make sure to read poker hand rankings.

The significant difference in this poker game is that you have four starting cards which means much more combinations. You should also know that in Omaha, you need to use exactly 2 of your pocket cards and three community cards to complete a winning combination. For example, if there are four cards of the same suit on the board and you have one card of the suit in your four community cards, you don’t have a flush! Lots of Texas Hold’em players get confused by this, as you can use any five cards in this game. However, you should always remember that – in Omaha, you have to use exactly 2 of your hole cards and precisely three community cards.

Omaha Hi-Lo

There’s a popular variation of Omaha that is called Omaha Hi-Lo. In this game, at the end of each hand, the pot is divided into two equal parts at showdown. The first one is won by the best hand in the traditional ranking system. The second part is called Lo and goes to the player with the worst possible holding that does not include a pair, a straight/flush, or a card higher than 8. The ace counts as both high and low card, so it can participate in the Lo combinations as well.

For example, the best possible Lo hand is A, 2, 3, 4, 6 that are not of the same suit. You should know that the cards get compared from the highest to the lowest in each hand. For example, a combination of 3 4 5 6 8 beats A 2 3 7 8.

It is possible that no “Lo” hand qualifies (meaning no one has five cards from 8 and below, with no pair, flush, or straight). In this case, the best Hi combination collects the whole pot. Once again, you have to use exactly 2 of your cards and 3 of the community cards to form both “Lo” and “High” hands.

7 Card Stud Poker Rules

There are plenty of the so-called stud poker games, but none is more popular than the 7 cards stud. It’s also one of the oldest forms of poker. 7 Card Stud is very different from Texas Hold’em, and a lot of players need time to get used to it.

First of all, this game is played with no community cards whatsoever – everyone has its own. Players are dealt in the following way: each player receives two cards that are face down and one that is face up. A round of betting follows, and if there are at least two players left, another card is dealt face up. The process is repeated until each player has 7 cards and the last card dealt is again face down. Thus, at the end of the hand, every player has 3 cards dealt face down and visible only to them and an additional 4 cards dealt face up. When this moment comes, there’s the final round of betting, and the best combination of 5 cards wins. The rankings are the same as in Texas Hold’em as well.

7 card stud poker rules

There are a couple of other things you need to know about 7 Card Stud. This poker game is played in the fixed limit format. At the start of each hand, the players are required to post the ante which is usually about ¼ of the lower limit. The bet during the first two rounds is the lower limit as well, for example, if the game is $1-2, you can bet/raise $1 during the first two betting rounds. There’s one exception, though. If any of the players have a pair that is face up in the second round, he or the opponents can pick between the higher and the lower bet.

Another critical difference in 7 Card Stud is the action order. The face-up cards determine it at the table, and the player with the best cards always acts first. For example, the highest card during round means you will be acting first. If you hit a pair or a higher card in round 2, you will be the one to start the betting.

Razz Poker Rules

Razz is a bit different poker game that has its own fan base. It’s again part of the stud group, as there are no community cards. Instead, the whole flow of the game, the number and type of cards dealt, as well as the betting rounds are similar to 7 Card Stud. Once again, each player starts with 2 hidden cards and 1 card that is face up. There are five betting rounds until everyone has 7 cards in total and the best hand wins at the end. Razz is also played in the fixed limit format and includes ante at the start of each hand.

The main difference here is that the lowest possible combination is the one that wins the hand. Flushes and straights don’t count against having the best low hand, only pairs, three and four of a kind. It means that the best possible hand in Razz is A 2 3 4 5. Even though you have a straight, it still counts as a low hand because of the exception I just mentioned, that flushes and straights do not harm your Lo hand.

It’ curious to note that there is a form of poker that combines Razz and 7 Card Stud. It’s called Stud Hi-Lo, and the pot is split between the high and low hands at the end. However, it more advanced game and you should only play it when you know the basics very well.

5 Card Draw Rules

The 5 Card Draw is an especially popular poker game in Europe. It’s quite simple regarding the rules, and you will often see it in older movies and books. The traditional 5 Card Draw poker hand starts when each players posts the ante, however, in some cases there are blinds similar to those in Texas Hold’em instead. Once the antes/blinds are posted, all contestants receive 5 cards that are dealt face down, and the opponents can’t see them. Then the first betting round happens. It ends once all players but one have folded or when all bets are called.

At this point, the players have the opportunity to replace their cards by throwing away between 1 or 5 of them. For each disposed card, the player receives a new one. Each person can also “stand pat”, which means to keep all of his cards without drawing new ones. When all new cards are dealt, the second and final betting round starts. If a player manages to force everyone else to fold, he wins the hand. If that’s not the case, there’s a showdown. The best possible combination of five cards wins the pot. The strength is the same as in Texas Holdem. Usually, there is no ranking of suits, so flushes consisting of five cards of the same rank split the pot.

2-7 Triple Draw Poker Rules

2-7 Triple Draw Lowball is another variation of poker that includes drawing of cards and has some similarities with 5 Card Draw. One of the main differences is that it’s a blinds game, so before each round, the two players to the left of the dealer post the small and big blind, respectively.

After that, each player is dealt 5 cards face down, one card at a time. Once everyone has his cards, the first round of betting starts. The flow is the same as in Texas Hold’em, so you will quickly get used to it. Once the first betting round is completed, each remaining player can throw away 1 or all 5 of his cards and replace them. Of course, he can also keep all cards and stand pat. The order is the same as on the flop in Texas Hold’em, the first player to the left of the dealer is first to act.

The same pattern repeats two more times when the players can draw new cards until they are satisfied with the combination they have. If there is more than one active player at the end of the hand, there is a showdown. Similarly to the low hand in Omaha, you have to hit the lowest possible combination. This means pairs, flushes, and straights count against you. It is crucial to remember that aces count only as high cards which makes them the worst in 2-7 Triple Draw. Thus, the best possible hand 2 3 4 5 7. It’s also important to know that the ranking starts from the highest card. For example, a combo of 2 3 4 5 T loses against a combo of 3 4 5 6 8.
