A two pair in poker is exactly what it sounds like: a five-card hand consisting of two cards of the same rank, accompanied by two cards of a different rank, and one unrelated side card (the kicker).
While it ranks 8th in the official Texas Hold'em poker hand rankings, it is actually one of the most common winning hands you will see at showdown. Here are a few examples of valid Two Pair combinations:
- A♠ A♥ K♦ K♣ Q♥ (Aces and Kings with a Queen kicker)
- Q♠ Q♥ 7♦ 7♣ 8♠ (Queens and Sevens)
- J♦ J♣ 4♥ 4♠ A♣ (Jacks and Fours with an Ace kicker)
Because there are five community cards in Texas Holdem, there are several different ways to make this hand:
- Hitting the board: You hold Q-J and the flop comes Q-J-5.
- Paired board: You hold a pocket pair like Q-Q, and the flop comes 7-7-8, giving you Q-Q-7-7-8.
- Pairing a board card: You hold K-J on a J-5-5 board.
- Playing the board: You hold A-T on a J-J-7-4-4 board. Your hand is automatically J-J-4-4-A (Jacks and Fours with an Ace kicker).
To determine the winner when two players both have Two Pair, you must always compare the highest pair first. For example, Q-Q-5-5-3 beats J-J-T-T-8 because Queens outrank Jacks. If both players have the same higher pair, the second pair is compared. If those are also identical, the kicker determines the winner (e.g., Q-Q-5-5-9 beats Q-Q-5-5-3).
Two Pair Odds and Probabilities
A Two Pair poker hand is one of the most frequent winners, so you will be happy to know that you actually have great odds to hit it:
- The odds of hitting Two Pair is 4.75% with any random poker hand.
- The odds of flopping Two Pair is 2.02% when you have an unpaired starting hand.
- You have a probability of 6.4% to improve your One Pair hand to a Two Pair from the flop to the turn.
- Your chances of improving a One Pair hand from the flop to make a Two Pair by the river is 12%.
These are very decent odds for Texas Hold'em, and you should feel pretty confident when you flop this hand.
