Early Position

Early position in poker is the first of three positions, followed by the middle and late positions.  It refers to the seats positioned clockwise to the blinds. Depending on the poker format you’re playing, the early position can refer to a varying number of seats.

Early Position Poker Example:

In a 9-handed poker game, players in the UTG (Under the Gun) and UTG +1 seats are in early position. In a 6-max game, there’s only one UTG position and, therefore, only one early position.
