The 2024 World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) is in full swing. With over 200 events in the books (out of 379 on the schedule), the series is now across its halfway mark, and players have claimed over $45,000,000 in prize money.

PokerStars has put a total guarantee of $80,000,000 on this year’s WCOOP, but looking at how things have been going thus far, this guarantee will be handsomely beaten, which is hardly uncommon for the world’s largest online tournament series.

As expected, a lot has happened over the first two weeks of play, and it’s impossible to cover all of it, but we’re bringing you an overview of some of the most memorable moments thus far.

Lex Veldhuis Bags His First WCOOP Title

It is somewhat crazy to think that a player of Lex Veldhuis’ stature did not have any WCOOP titles heading into the 2024 series, but it just goes to show that variance in poker can be really brutal at times.

Lex is one of the most dedicated grinders out there, but until a few days ago, he just couldn’t close the deal in a WCOOP event despite of coming close to it many times.

The popular poker streamer and the PokerStars Team Pro member finally got that monkey off his back just a couple of days into the series, triumphing in the $5,200 Bounty Builder Super High Roller and bagging $130,000 for his efforts.

It is interesting that the first SCOOP title for Lex also came in a $5,200 KO event, so it was only fitting that he went on to close the deal in this two-day event, which was one of the first tournaments on this year’s WCOOP schedule.

‘Tonkaaaa’ on a Heater

It’s been a great series for Parker ‘Tonkaaaa’ Talbot, as he’s managed to book three victories thus far, and his grind continues in search for more titles.

The one that Talbot was perhaps the most proud of was in the $10k 8-Game High Roller event. This was a small-field tournament, and ‘Tonkaaaa’ made just over $100k for his victory, but it is arguably one of the toughest fields in existence.

Talbot went up against some of the finest mixed game players around and, with some help from poker gods, was able to hold his own and be the last man standing in this extremely competitive event.

In addition to three wins, which netted him over $200k, Talbot had several more deep runs, including a runner-up finish in a $5k 6-Max Turbo, so he’s clearly in the zone and far from done.

Niklas “Lena900” Astedt Lands Two Titles in One Night

The name of Niklas Astedt has been well known in the online poker community for some time now, but wider audience has become familiar with him after his third place finish in this year’s WSOP Main Event.

The Swede is widely considered one of the best online tournament players, and he seems intent on proving worthy of that title.

Last week, “Lena900” went on a hot run, winning not one but two WCOOP titles on the same night. The Swedish phenom took down the $1k Sunday Kickoff to the tune of $48,000, followed by the $2k 5-Card PLO event for another $50,000.

These wins brought Asted’s total career WCOOP count to nine, but we fully expect that number to increase in the near future and possibly even over the next few days.

The Pressure Is on for the Player of the Series Title

With fine performances by quite a few players, it’s no surprise that the Player of the Series leaderboard looks pretty tight at the moment.

Currently sitting in first is “FAL1st,” who managed to seize three wins this WCOOP. Combined with other deep runs, he currently has 1,885 points.

However, his position is far from secure, as the three players chasing him are well within the distance and could easily turn things around with a couple of good scores.

This means that the race for the prestigious title will likely remain close until the very end, which certainly makes things more entertaining for players and fans alike.

The 2024 WCOOP Action Continues

Even as I’m writing this article, the action rages on in the 2024 World Championship of Online Poker. For some of the players, there is no rest for as long as the series is happening, and they will not miss any opportunities to add more titles to their resumes.

The Main Event weekend is still a few days away, but in the meantime, there are plenty of tournaments to keep the excitement levels high.

Of course, if you feel like playing some poker, the WCOOP features events in all buy-in tiers and heaps of satellites to more expensive events, so don’t hesitate to join the action.

September might be the best month to hop on the tournament grind on PokerStars and play for your share of big prize pools and WCOOP glory.
