An $80,000 guaranteed poker tournament usually comes with a much bigger price tag than $8.
That is exactly why Stake Poker August Madness caught my attention.
The one-day tournament runs on Sunday, August 30, with an $8 buy-in and an $80,000 guaranteed prize pool. Better yet, it uses a Progressive Knockout format, so part of the action revolves around collecting bounties.
I also checked the tournament directly inside the Stake Poker client on August 27. For anyone looking for a low-cost tournament this weekend, this is one of the more interesting options on the schedule.
I Found August Madness Live in the Stake Poker Lobby
Stake's promotion page gives the headline numbers, but I wanted to see what the actual tournament lobby showed.
The event is already listed under the tournament section as Stake Poker August Madness.
When I checked it on August 27, the lobby showed:
- $8 buy-in
- $80,000 guaranteed
- 5,000 starting chips
- 90 minutes of late registration
- 10,000-player maximum
- 8-handed tables
The guarantee works out neatly with the tournament's August theme. However, the event could become even more interesting if registration stays well below the 10,000-player cap.
That number can still move quickly before Sunday.
The lobby shows 90 minutes of late registration, while August Madness also allows unlimited re-entry. Because the buy-in is only $8, I expect plenty of players to take more than one shot if they bust early.
That makes the final number of entries difficult to predict from the current registration count alone.

So, while more than 500 players were already registered on August 27, I would not read too much into that number yet. Unlimited re-entry and late registration could increase the field significantly on Sunday.
$8 Into an $80K GTD Is the Real Selling Point
There is no complicated promotion mechanic here. You do not need to complete missions, collect tickets, or qualify through multiple stages. You pay $8, register for the tournament, and play for a guaranteed $80,000 prize pool.
That simplicity is probably the strongest part of August Madness.
Stake has built the promotion around the number eight because August is the eighth month. The result is an $8 tournament attached to an $80K guarantee.
It is also a much more accessible price point than most large-guarantee Sunday events.
Still, the low buy-in should not be confused with low risk. Tournament poker has significant variance, and there is never a guaranteed return for an individual player.
The PKO Format Adds Another Layer
August Madness is not a standard freezeout.
It runs as a Progressive Knockout tournament, which means every player has a bounty attached to them.
When you eliminate another player, part of that bounty is paid immediately. The remaining portion increases the bounty on your own head.
As the tournament progresses, some players can therefore become very valuable targets. That changes the strategy compared with a normal MTT.
There will be situations where calling wider makes sense because a large bounty is available. However, blindly chasing eliminations can also destroy a healthy stack.
The regular tournament prize pool still matters.

Registration is already available, so there is no need to wait until Sunday.

Stake also lists a maximum field of 10,000 players. Therefore, anyone who definitely wants to play can register in advance.
Existing Stake Poker players can simply open the poker client and find August Madness under the tournament section.

For me, the appeal of this promotion comes down to one number combination:

There are no complicated requirements attached to the tournament itself, while the PKO format gives players another way to generate returns through bounties.
The fact that I could already see more than 500 registered players three days before the event also confirms that the tournament is active and attracting early interest.
I would keep an eye on that registration number as Sunday approaches.
If the field remains comfortably below the maximum, the guarantee becomes even more interesting. If thousands of players register late, it simply becomes a large-field $8 PKO with a substantial prize pool.
Either way, August Madness stands out on Stake Poker's current schedule.
