Believe it or not, it’s been 16 years since PokerStars first launched their flagship tournament, the Sunday Million.

Over the years, this tournament has made more online poker players famous than any other, and this Sunday it’s returning for a very special edition.

To celebrate the 16th anniversary of Sunday Million, PokerStars is hosting a $10,000,000 guaranteed edition of its flagship event on March 20.

The tournament kicks off at 18:05 CET and is returning to its original $215 buyin.

While players are used to the $109 price tag on the Sunday Million as of late, the return to the original buyin will help meet the massive guaranteed prize pool.

Of course, it is not out of the question that the 16th Anniversary Sunday Million will have an overlay, as attracting 50,000 players to pony up this buyin will not be an easy feat.

To help with this, PokerStars has prepared a massive number of satellite tournaments, with opportunities to qualify starting as low as just $0.50.

16th Anniversary Sunday Million Structure and Schedule

As already mentioned, the special edition Sunday Milly will launch on Sunday, March 20, at 18:05 CET, with the usual structure that players are used to.

This means every player who enters the tournament will start with 20,000 in chips. The blinds will start out at 50/100, giving everyone a 200 bb stack to play with.

Every player can make up to five re-entries, a right that will surely be exercised by a host of professionals looking to make a deep run in this special event.

Later registration, which includes the option to re-enter, will last deep into the tournament, with players still given an option to buyin during the first level of the tournament’s Day 2.

Those who decide to buyin on Monday will get 10 big blinds to play with. It’s also worth noting that blinds will change every 20 minutes during Day 1 and every 15 minutes during Day 2 and Day 3.

A Look Back at the 15th Anniversary

Looking at the upcoming 16th Anniversary Sunday Million, it is worth taking a look back at what happened last year, when PokerStars celebrated 15 years of the fabled tournament.

That time around, the operator slapped at $12.5 million guarantee, with at least a cool million guaranteed to the winner.

When all was said and done, it was Vanessa Kade, one of the best online female poker players, who bested the field of more than 69,000 participants and took home over $1.5 million in prize money.

On this occasion, the prize pool is a bit smaller, so we can expect the first place to be as well, but the winner is still sure to take home more than $1,000,000.

While PokerStars has had problems getting enough players to meet its weekly $1 million guarantee, the Anniversary edition tournaments tend to bring in more online poker players than one would normally expect.

If last year’s tournament is anything to judge by, there may be more than $10,000,000 paid out in the end.

However, let’s wait for the weekend and see just what happens once the re-entries start coming in!
