The 2024 World Championship of Online Poker gets underway today, bringing heaps of excitement to all fans of tournaments out there. But besides getting into action yourself, you can also enjoy the series by getting involved with the WCOOP 2024 League.
Following the success of the SCOOP League from earlier this year, PokerStars is bringing back this fun competition, introducing a few novelties, and once again offering everyone a chance to win an extremely valuable Gold Pass.
All you have to do is pick one of the five teams, place a small bet on them, and if they end up winning the League, you’ll have a fair shot at your Gold Pass. Keep on reading to learn about all the details and throw your hat into the mix before the September 12 deadline.
Take Your Pick from Six Teams
The WCOOP 2024 League features six teams. Each team consists of a captain and four players who were selected through the draft. Captains got one ‘pro’ pick, three “regular” players, and there is one player in each team coming from the pool of WCOOP Bootcamp Leaderboard winners.
In addition to the previous league winner, Lex Veldhuis, the other five captains are:
- Parker ‘Tonkaaaa’ Talbot
- Sebastian “peace&loove” Huber
- Andre Akkari (who is the only one not to pick himself as the pro pick)
- Fintan “easywithaces” Hand
- Benjamin “Spraggy” Spragg
All players on PokerStars have up to September 12 to pick their favorite and place a bet of at least $5 on their selected team to qualify for the freeroll where they’ll have a shot at a Gold Pass. Of course, you are fully within your right to bet on all six teams, thus securing your seat in the tournament.
Teams will collect points based on their players’ performances in the 2024 WCOOP events, and the team finishing with the highest number of points when it is all said and done will win the League. All players who backed the winning team will receive their freeroll tickets.
The tournament will take place on October 5, and it will feature the following prizes:
- $10,300 Power Path Gold Pass for the winner
- $2,500 Silver Pass for the runner-up
- $530 ticket for a NAPT Las Vegas satellite
- 4th – 9th – $109 Bronze Passes
On top of these main prizes, all players finishing in the top 125 spots will pick up Power Path Step tickets and smaller tickets for NAPT Las Vegas satellites.
What Team to Pick?
There are a few days left to make up your mind and choose what team to back in the WCOOP 2024 League. It’s not an easy decision, as every team brings a unique set of skills to the table, but here are a few pointers to help you pick:
- Team Veldhuis – featuring a few very strong players, including Benny Glaser, the man with the highest number of COOP titles, Team Veldhuis is the safest pick. You won’t go wrong if you put your money behind the team led by the reigning champion.
- Team Tonkaaaa – Parker Talbot is very confident about his team, and he has plenty of reason to be. With arguably the best online tournament player, Niklas “Lena900” Astedt, by his side and “Tonkaaaa” himself ready to grind every day, they have a great shot at running away the winners.
- Team Peace&Loove – A newcomer to the League, Sebastian “peace&loove” Huber, went for an interesting team made up of a couple of the best leaderboard players and a fellow Team Pro member Lasse “Wistern” Jagd Lauritsen. This team certainly has the potential to make an upset.
- Team Aakkari – although Akkari decided not to pick himself as he won’t be playing the full schedule, this team is still very respectable. It represents an interesting mix of players proficient in different game formats, so they stand to pick up some points that other teams won’t even be going after.
- Team Fintan – Fintan Hand is coming into the WCOOP 2024 League to settle the score after everything that could have gone wrong went wrong in the SCOOP League. This time around, he has the likes of Patrick Leonard and Adrian Mateos by his side, so his team is certainly not a long shot.
- Team Spraggy – It seems that “Spraggy” isn’t too confident about his team's chances going into the League, so take from that what you like. They’ll certainly do their best at the tables, and a good start could be just the moral boost they need.
That’s all the information you need to get involved and make your 2024 WCOOP experience even better. Even if you don’t have plans to play yourself, this is something you can pick up and have a bit of fun sweating your picks, and with a bit of luck, get a seat in a freeroll with really valuable prizes!
