In poker, the term “trips” is used for a specific three-of-a-king hand combination that consists of three cards of the same rank with one of those cards being the player’s hole card and the other being community cards.
Trips are the 7th strongest of all hand combinations in poker. It is weaker than a straight but stronger than two pairs.
It is important to note that a three of a kind combination in poker can also be put together by combining two hole cards of the same rank with one community card of that same rank.
This three of a kind combination is called a set, and although it is essentially the same hand as trips in the context of poker hand ranking, it is considered much more valuable because the chances of your opponent putting you on this hand are much lower.
Poker Trips Example:
Let’s say that you are holding 7d 6s in the Texas Holdem poker game, and the flop comes Ac 7h 7c, giving you three of a kind sevens.
In this situation, your three of a kind hand is called trips since it consists of one hole card and two community cards.
Now imagine a slightly different scenario. Let’s say that you are holding 7d 7s, and the flop comes Ac 7c 6d, giving you three of a kind sevens.
In this situation, your three of a kind hand would be called a set since it consists of two hole cards and one community card.
As you can see from this example, although both the set and the trips are three of a kind combinations, the set is considered a much stronger hand since this combination is much harder to detect for your opponents.
