What Are Hole Cards In Poker?
In poker, the term “hole cards” refers to the cards dealt face down to each player at the beginning of the hand.
Hole cards are only revealed in all-in situations or at the showdown, and even then, players can keep their hole cards a secret if they are last to act and their opponent shows a winning hand.
Depending on the poker format you are playing, you can receive a different number of hole cards:
- Texas Hold’em – each player receives two hole cards.
- Omaha – each player receives four hole cards
- 5-Card Draw – each player receives five hole cards.
Furthermore, depending on the format, hole cards can be used in combination with community cards, like in Texas Hold’em or Omaha, or they can be used on their own, like in 5-Card Draw.
Poker is a game of information, and it is extremely important to keep your hole cards a secret since revealing them would put you at a huge disadvantage.
Poker Holde Cards Example:
The player had already reached ITM positions in the poker turbo tournament and saw 9s 8s on the BTN when he looked at his hole cards. Since his M-ratio was low and both of these cards were likely to be live cards if called, he decided to jam.
