What Is The Button In Poker?
In poker, the term “Button” refers to the best possible position at the table marked by a round disc or marker to highlight dealer position.
After each hand, the Button moves one spot to the left. If you are on the button, you are sitting in the dealer position and will be acting last in all betting rounds postflop.
The Button position is extremely important in poker since it determines which player will act last during a hand. This means that the player who has the Button gets to see how other players before him will act before he decides what to do.
In addition, the positional advantage that the Button gives allows you to control the size of the pot and bluff more effectively.
Because of this, poker players use wider ranges when playing from the Button than for any other position as they look to play as many pots as possible from the strongest position at the table.
With this said, it is important to note that position itself does not guarantee success, and you still have to excel in other areas of the game to be a winning poker player.
Poker Button Example:
Let’s say that you are starting a game of Texas Hold’em with 8 other players in a full-ring game, and you get dealt the high card, thus winning the Button position.
The dealer will push the Button marker towards you, signaling to all other players at the table that you will be the last person to act in the first hand. This is also a signal to the two players on your left, who will be the SB and the BB accordingly, that they are required to post blinds before the hand starts.
