The WPT Prime Cyprus festival is done and dusted, and when all the dust had settled, it was Tudor Purice of Romania walking away with his head high.
Purice managed to be the last man standing in the 1,202-player field of the World Poker Tour Prime Cyprus Championship, picking up an impressive $183,270 for his efforts and booking the best result of his career.
With the Cyprus festival in the books, players can now look forward to the WPT festival kicking off in Lichtenstein in less than two weeks. In the meantime, here’s a breakdown of the most important events that took place in Cyprus.
Big Turnout for the Championship Event
The WPT Prime Cyprus Championship came with a fairly standard admission fee of $1,100, and over the course of four starting flights, the tournament attracted a total of 1,100 entries.
The guarantee for the Championship was set at $1,000,000, but by the time the registration window had closed, that promise was handsomely broken, with a total of $1,165,940 up for grabs.
This meant that 152 players would be making money, with everyone progressing to Day 2, securing a payout of at least $1,940 and guaranteeing a bit of profit for their efforts (for those who fired only one bullet, that is).
But, like in any other tournament, the big money was saved for those making the final table, and, especially the winner. The last player standing in the event would take home $172,870 in cold, hard cash, plus a $10,400 package for the WPT Championship in December.
Day 2 started with 151 players, though, as two players ended up splitting the min-cash at the end of Day 1C, bringing those who found the bag that bit closer to the coveted final table.
Strong Showing from Purice
While the most recent win may be his best result in terms of money and prestige, Tudor Purice is certainly no stranger to tournament action. His Hendon Mob results date back to 2011, so he’s been around for a little while.
In addition to his live results, the Romanian has an impressive online poker resume, with well over $3,000,000 in earnings, so a big live score such as this was only a matter of time.
Purice patiently built his stack throughout Day 2, and he came into the final table second in chips. The final table action was fast and furious, and although chips kept moving around, the Romanian managed to keep a healthy stack all along.
By the time the final skirmish occurred, Tudor had almost all the chips in play in front of him, so his opponent, Aleksandre Apryan, needed a lot of help from the deck to even begin to turn things around.
No such help arrived, though, as it took only one hand for Purice to administer the final blow and capture the title. The final tally for his efforts was $183,270 (accounting for the WPT Championship package), while Aleksandre Apryan of Georgia picked up $115,250, which is the best result of his career by far.
Another Strong Showing from the WPT
The World Poker Tour has thrown a number of successful events this year and it has gone from strength to strength in recent time.
Expanding its presence outside of the United States and even into the online realm, one of the biggest poker tours in the world has truly justified the “global” part of its name. Players all over the world can now compete for WPT and WPT Prime titles.
There is plenty more action remaining on this year World Poker Tour schedule, taking place in Canada, US, Australia, the UK, Paris, and the upcoming WPT Prime festival in Lichtenstein.
If you’re looking for some affordable tournament action with big prize pools and large player fields, WPT Prime festivals are one of your best bets. These things, combined with great organization in every way, will ensure you have a pleasant and memorable poker trip no matter the destination.
