The WSOP Main Event came to a close yesterday, with Jonathan Tamayo winning the gold bracelet and the $10,000,000 first-place prize. Amidst final table action, WSOP announced the second edition of WSOP Paradise, set to play out from December 6 to 19 at Paradise Island, Bahamas.
WSOP Paradise was introduced last year for the first time, and thousands of poker players from all over the world decided to make the trip to the Bahamas.
The festival offered plenty of action across the board, including a $5,000 Main Event that attracted 3,010 entries and saw Stanislav Zegal win $2,000,000 and the gold bracelet.
This time around, WSOP went a step further, announcing a massive $50,000,000 guaranteed Super Main Event with a $25k buyin, along with a $1,000,000 buyin event for the super high rollers.
The second-ever WSOP Paradise festival could be one for the ages, with the full schedule yet to be announced in the coming weeks.
WSOP Paradise Set to Break Records
Another epic edition of WSOP in Las Vegas is now behind us, and the poker community is looking forward to upcoming events, including WSOP Europe in the fall and the newly-announced WSOP Paradise in December.
After a successful trial last year, WSOP and GGPoker have decided to take WSOP Paradise to the next level and shatter some records.
The $50,000,000 guarantee for the WSOP Paradise Super Main Event will be quite an undertaking, as the tournament will shatter quite a few records regardless of the turnout.
For one, the event will become the biggest guaranteed prize pool event in the history of live poker, surpassing last year’s WPT World Championship by $10,000,000.
Furthermore, the Super Main Event will become the biggest $25k tournament ever, overtaking the record-setting edition of PokerStars PSPC in the same location.
For comparison, that $25k tournament attracted 1,039 players, while the WSOP Paradise Super Main Event will require at least 2,000 entries to reach its target prize pool.
Whether this many players enter the event or not remains to be seen, but the guarantee on the event will ensure previous records are shattered.
WSOP’s international online poker partner GGPoker will play a big part in the process, as hundreds of players will likely find their Super Main Event seat via the platform.
With a buyin set significantly higher than last year’s WSOP Paradise Main Event, it will be interesting to see just how many players GGPoker can get to the Bahamas by December.
How Will 2024 Compare to 2023?
Last year was the first time WSOP was played in the Bahamas, and the festival was a huge success by all parameters, especially taking into consideration its dates coincide with two other major poker festivals.
Over 3,000 players in the Main Event and some of the best poker players showing up to play the 15 bracelet events showed the world that WSOP Paradise was a good idea.
Poker legend Erik Seidel won his 10th WSOP bracelet in a $50k Super High Roller last year, but this time around, the meaning of Super High Roller is about to be taken to a whole new level.
WSOP has announced that the Paradise series will include tournaments with buyins between $2,500 and $1,000,000, which means players of all levels will have a chance to compete.
If last year is anything to go by, WSOP Paradise will once more be mostly a No Limit Hold’em poker festival, although we could see a few mixed games events on the schedule as well.
The full schedule for the 2024 WSOP Paradise will be released in the following weeks and should give us a better idea of exactly what to expect come December.
Major Poker Tours in Competition
When WSOP announced their WSOP Paradise series would be played in December last year, there were quite a few players who didn’t like the fact the dates were very similar to those of the WPT World Championship and EPT Prague.
Yet, all three tours see undeterred by competition and are confident that their festivals will be very successful, including the WSOP.
Executive Director of WSOP Ty Stewart said: “The action we saw during the WSOP summer series is a testament to the health of poker, particularly for high-roller tournaments. We’re thrilled GGPoker has reaffirmed their commitment to building WSOP Paradise through the biggest guarantee in poker history.”
Indeed, the turnout for this year’s WSOP in Las Vegas and another record-breaking field in the Main Event showed that the interest in live poker has never been bigger.
The three winter festivals will also be a battle of online poker operators, with GGPoker, WPT Global, and PokerStars all looking to send as many qualifiers as possible to the live festivals they are associated with.
For those looking to play some live poker this winter, here is a quick look at the dates of the three major festivals happening in the days leading up to Christmas:
- WPT World Championship: December 3 – 23
- EPT Prague: December 4 – 15
- WSOP Paradise: December 6 – 19
While it will be possible to travel between the destinations and make it in time to play the Main Event of more than one series, the overlapping dates will mean most players will select only one festival to play this winter.
