Staying alert and trying to pick up any tells on your opponents is very important in live games. But there is the other side of that coin as well.

Just like you observe the other players, they observe you, looking to find anything they could use to help them make better decisions against you.

Of course, you don’t want to volunteer any information to your opponents, but how can you prevent them? What can you do to mask your own poker tells?

Save Your Energy – Don’t Overdo It!

It is important not to give away any information at the tables, but you can’t allow this to become your primary preoccupation, distracting you from other important aspects.

My suggestion is to find a type of movement and rhythm that doesn’t cost you too much energy. Find a routine that’s comfortable for you and feels natural.

One question that I frequently had to answer was why I look so “cold” at the tables.

It is simply a routine that I became accustomed to so that I don’t have to spend too much energy thinking or worrying about it. It’s a resting position that I’ll follow every time, regardless of the situation at hand.

I try to keep my hands in the same position, handle the chips in the same manner, and place my bets at the same speed at all times.

This behavior makes it very hard for my opponents to pick up any specific tells. At the same time, because I’ve become accustomed to it and it comes naturally to me, it doesn’t take up too much energy, so it meets both goals.

You are masking your tells while not obsessing over your routine.

My suggestion to everyone out there is to find a routine that works for them. Don’t try to imitate anyone else. Instead, find a rhythm that works for you and stick to it.

Added Benefits of Having a Routine

Masking your tells isn’t just about preventing others from getting information from you. It’s also about giving you the inner peace that will help you at the tables.

Once you have your routine in place, you’ll no longer have to worry about someone picking up on your tells and using this knowledge against you.

One tool that has worked quite well for me is the stare-down.

This may seem counterintuitive at first, but many poker players will not feel comfortable looking at you when you stare right at them.

And, if they’re not looking at you, they can’t pick up any information from your behavior.

This, too, will help boost your confidence and help you feel more relaxed. Staring down other players may not come naturally to everyone, but this technique will help discourage others from actively observing your behavior, so it’s a skill worth learning!
