In craps, 11 is called “yo” or “yo-leven” to keep it from being confused with “seven.” The two numbers sound similar, especially across a noisy casino table. Adding “yo” makes the call easier to distinguish when the dealer announces a roll or a player asks for a bet on 11.
Why dealers say yo eleven
Clear calls matter because 7 and 11 can have very different consequences. Once a point has been established, a 7 ends the shooter’s turn and loses the Pass Line bet. An 11 does neither: the Pass Line bet stays in play.
You may hear the full call “yo eleven,” the shortened “yo,” or the spelling “yo-leven.” Each refers to the same dice total. An 11 comes from a 5 on one die and a 6 on the other, in either order.
A total of 11 can appear as 5 + 6 or 6 + 5: two of 36 equally likely outcomes with fair dice.
Is the name about bad luck
Some players avoid saying “seven” because they consider it unlucky, particularly while a point is on. That superstition is part of table culture; it does not change the dice probabilities. The practical reason for saying “yo” is to make 11 sound different from 7.
You may also hear the rhyming call “six five, no jive.” It refers to the same 5-and-6 combination. Whatever the wording, calling the number differently has no effect on the next roll.

The yo call and the yo bet
The call “yo” can announce any roll of 11. A yo bet is a separate wager that the next roll will total 11; every other total loses. At a 15:1 payout, a winning $1 bet earns $15 in profit, with the $1 stake returned as well, for $16 in total. A losing bet costs the $1 stake.
